The YWCA of Calgary Steps Up Annual “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” Fundraiser with Strategy Consulting from Blackbaud

The YWCA of Calgary is dedicated to breaking the cycles of domestic violence, homelessness, and poverty by offering programs and services for women and their families that provide them with the skills, abilities, and opportunities to contribute to and benefit from healthy communities. The organization believes that healthy women and healthy families lead to a thriving community. A vital piece of Calgary’s social and economic fabric, the organization served more than 15,000 vulnerable women, children, and men in 2008. The organization strives for a society where there is no longer a gender gap, and the cycles of domestic violence, homelessness, and poverty have been eradicated.

Challenge

  • The YWCA of Calgary wanted to raise $50,000 more during the 2009 “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” fundraiser than the previous year.
  • The organization wanted to maximize the use of its new website and online event fundraising tools, which provided much more functionality than the organization was used to.
  • The YWCA of Calgary wanted to enhance the event’s online presence.

Solution

  • The YWCA of Calgary utilized Blackbaud’s Strategic Consulting Services to help revitalize its annual “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” fundraising event.
  • The organization used Blackbaud NetCommunity to give walkers and teams the ability to create their own personal fundraising web pages, complete with photos and personal messages.
  • The strategic consulting recommendations provided by Blackbaud helped the YWCA of Calgary utilize the competitive nature of people to help increase donations and further engage participants.
  • The YWCA of Calgary also used the email options in Blackbaud NetCommunity to stay in touch with the participants, providing updates on celebrities, acknowledging top fundraisers, and sharing fundraising tips and advice on how best to use their web pages to facilitate the fundraising process.

Results

  • The YWCA of Calgary surpassed its goal of $150,000 by more than $21,000.
  • The YWCA of Calgary implemented various Blackbaud suggestions, such as offering tiered prizes to participants based on dollars raised, providing a special breakfast to honour the previous year’s top fundraiser and top team, and listing the top five individuals and teams on the event home page.
  • The top walker and top team each received a trophy engraved with their names and the date. Each trophy will be passed on to next year’s top participants to challenge top walkers and top teams to continually raise more and challenge other walkers and teams to raise more than the previous year’s winners.
  • Additionally, the YWCA of Calgary helped further engage walkers and sponsors by having sponsors serve as judges for fun awards, such as “Most Luscious Legs,” “Most Flamboyant Footwork,” and “Most Decadent Dress.”
