Formed in 1952, the Austin Humane Society is Austin’s largest, longest standing no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter. The organization is dedicated to eliminating unnecessary euthanasia of dogs and cats through innovative life-saving adoption programs, high-volume spay and neuter programs, engaging the community, and serving animals and people in times of crisis.

Challenge

The Austin Humane Society had two different systems: one for its email marketing and another for online donations. Individually, each system provided the appropriate functionality; however, the two were not integrated and could not share data. This presented a significant challenge for AHS. Email appeals, which were sent through one system, would push constituents to the online donation page, which was with another vendor. Because of this, AHS could not determine the effectiveness of its marketing communications, nor easily track donor engagement for effective stewardship initiatives.

Additionally, AHS had no control over its online donation page. Any changes that needed to be made had to go through the vendor causing delays and inhibiting the organization from acting quickly, especially when time-sensitive issues such as emergencies, arose.

Solution

The Austin Humane Society determined that an integrated system was necessary to overcome these challenges. An integrated system would allow AHS to react quickly, save time importing and exporting lists, and enable segmented and targeted communications. For these reasons, AHS selected Blackbaud® NetCommunity™.

Blackbaud NetCommunity provides both online donation and email capabilities while seamlessly interacting with the organization’s database, The Raiser’s Edge®. The interaction between NetCommunity and Raiser’s Edge gives AHS a 360 degree view of its constituents. Data is stored in a single location and easily accessible, enabling AHS to gather more information on donor behaviour and preferences. Furthermore, this data is presented in a manner that helps AHS better serve its constituents, provide the information desired by its supporters, and ultimately, become a more successful organization. The data enables AHS to determine the effectiveness of its email marketing efforts and make adjustments if and when necessary. It also allows the organization to better steward its constituents.

Results

Blackbaud NetCommunity has effectively helped AHS address all these challenges. The interacting systems have saved the organization time and given it the power to make changes to its donation page as needed and without delay. These are not the only benefits AHS has experienced. One of the most influential functionalities enabled by NetCommunity is the reporting and data. This has proven vital to help AHS make better decisions that have led to more dollars raised, increased donor acquisition, better donor retention efforts, and overall greater satisfaction.

Shortly after launching NetCommunity, the organization launched an email campaign. The goal was to raise $3,000 online. The campaign raised more than $16,000 – 500 percent over goal!
